Last October 29, 2016, SkX started their first project by conducting a "Science Saturday" event with the kids of My Father's House - Paranaque. The foundation has 30 kids, ranging from 2-17 years old. The program started off with a "sing and dance" portion to energize the kids for the next 2 hours. Filled with excitement, the kids were treated to an array of science demos using home-made materials. SkX started with the ‘Bubble Snake’ experiment, using a bottle, socks, and dishwashing soap to make a long string of colorful bubbles. This was followed by the ‘Elephant’s toothpaste’ experiment using Agua oxigenada and yeast to make a tower of expanding foam that resembles toothpaste coming out of a tube. After the demos, 3 'science stations’ await the eager kids to explore. The stations included a ‘Nature Art activity’, where they used spray bottles and leaves to make art, ‘Star wrapping’ where they had to wrap a star made of board paper with a purple yarn, and ‘Slime making’, where they created their own slime using borax and glue. The science program was enjoyed not only by the kids, but also by the volunteers who willingly gave their time and effort to assist with the activities. For them, it was a new way to reach out to underprivileged kids and they learned a lot themselves. The group now waits for December for their donation giving to the kids of My Father’s House – Paranaque. Donations were from the fundraiser they held by selling Crystal-topper boxes, raising a total of 6,500 PHP. The money will be used to acquire school and sanitary supplies. SkX’s next project will start next year, which will be the official launch of their goal to conduct a 15 to 28-day STEM-integrated program to a chosen foundation or a group of kids with no access to formal education. Scienkidfic Xplorers is now looking for donors and volunteers to support their campaign.
