Scienkidfic Xplorers Team with Teacher Jean and Teacher Lovely of San Juan Elementary School From PLASTIC to PLANTASTIC!
Last June 16, the Scienkidfic Xplorers team visited San Juan Elementary School in San Juan City to have a fun science camp! The science camp's theme is "Kwentong Kalinisan", aiming to teach kids about taking care of the environment and its effect on planet Earth. The camp started with a live storytelling/play by Kythe Ateneo, which is the student arm of Kythe Foundation Inc., a non-stock non-profit organization dedicated to providing support to pediatric patients with chronic illnesses such as cancer, kidney diseases and blood disorders, and their families from its affiliate hospitals. Their play is entitled "Stefen Saves The Sharks". It's a bout a boy named Stefen who met a shark and became good friends. The story shows the hardships of ocean animals due to pollution. You can watch the play here. After the play, the kids went to their respective chairs to start the mini table sessions, which is an experiment-based discussion about pollution. The kids enjoyed explaining about their opinions and ideas about pollution, and how to avoid it. Our science communication volunteers were able to facilitate and process each of the experiments so that the kids can also feel the topic. To reinforce the topic's concept, the kids finished the session with a planting activity. Using plastic bottles, they reused it to plant monggo seeds. The kids were so happy and excited to take care of their plants!
